It's been some time since my last blog post but I hope every one's year is off to a great start and wish you all the best for 2009! The Las Vegas Entertainment  Expo last month was quite an experience!

Surprisingly, many of the attendees were interested in procedures to rejuvenate their face for a fresher look. I would hold up a mirror and ask "what would you like to change?" Almost immediately, they tugged at their skin around the eyes and I knew the perfect solution they were looking for:   Blepharoplasty, or an upper and lower eyelid tuck.

Can your eyes tell your age? Absolutely! As we age, the upper eyelid loses its "freshness" from years of squinting, frowning, and smiling. The eyelid skin begins to droop and ultimately rests on the eyelashes due to lost elasticity. These folds of droopy skin plus excess fat that create "bags" make the face look tired and old in appearance. Removing the excess skin and restructuring or removing the excess fat from the upper eyelids is called Upper Blepharoplasty. The incision is made in the upper eyelid crease and is completely unnoticeable once the patient has recovered. The result is natural and erases years off the face!  It also helps in older patients who have a vision problems because of the excess skin.

It is very common for the lower eyelids to show age related changes before other areas of the face. The skin and muscles of the lower eyelid start to lose their elasticity creating a sagging and weary appearance. The lower eyelid  bags are more prominent from excess fat behind the loose skin. To remove excess fat with a lower blepharoplasty, the incision is made inside the lower eye lid crease or it can be made on the inside of the eyelid, so there is no scar!!!   It is possible for fat to be repositioned or extracted.  Depending on the patients needs, the muscle and tendon attached to the eyelid may need to be reshaped and re-suspended.   Not only are the lower eyelids looking younger, but the same surgery can pull the midface up, giving higher cheeks and even smoothing out any excess skin!

Blepharoplasty is much less painful with a faster recovery time compared to other facial surgeries! My Look Surgery offers chemical peels and laser resurfacing which may be needed in conjunction with blepharoplasty to reduce wrinkles and crow's feet.
